It may be true that black bears are not as dangerous for backpackers as brown bears, but there are many cases of black bear attacks – some of them fatal. So even if you country is in the black bear, there are some things you need to know. First, and perhaps most important, is how to prevent an attack.

How avoid a heart Black Bear

Be noisy. In general, a black bear come out of your way if you know who is going down the path. The surprise, however, and can attack. If you are hiking with a friend, a conversation is enough noise to announce their presence to local animals. If you are alone, you might want to use some "bear bells" or sing a song.

Being less conspicuous. You see with the naked eye from a long distance when in bright and colorful clothes. In Alaska, there has been carrying out the bright colors and they come to investigate, while hikers will not see often in darker colors. It is not clear that this is the case of black bear, but it's something to consider when buying this rain jacket – especially if you are backpacking in the open.

No Cook where sleep. Instead, a stop on the way to cook dinner, then continue walking for a while before stopping for the night. If you have already set up camp, walk a short distance distance to cook dinner. The idea is to keep odors away from where you sleep.

Hang food out of reach. This usually means ten feet tall and four feet from the trunk of a tree – difficult in some areas that do not have many large trees. Instead of using the ropes, it is often easier to lift food bag with a stick (I use my stick) and hang from a knob on a branch well. While some backpackers to keep food with them in zippered plastic bags inside plastic bags from other, unless each smell is gone, the bears are likely to come visiting.

Two Black Bear type attacks

Bears, when he was caught – especially if they have cubs in the vicinity – attack to try to scare away. These are called "bluff attacks," and may terminate without contact, or the animal may start a couple of times. With this type of attack, the bear growls a lot and seems very angry. Try to talk quietly as you slowly disappear, or if the attack continues, interlace your fingers behind your neck to protect it, and curl on the floor. The bear may just bat around a few seconds, and then they leave.

Unfortunately, this is not the only type of attack. There are also those in which is being harassed and persecuted. It is not common, but the bear black sometimes hunt humans for food. When this is the intent, you do not want to "Play Dead", or will be soon. Fight for your life!

With this type of attack, the bear is likely to be quiet, nose, ears folded back, and watching closely as it moves toward you. He is trying to determine if you are easy prey, so do not. Yell, swing your trekking poles, and do anything you can do to convince those who lead you too fix for a meal.

Putting something between you and the bear can help. A man who was being chased by a black bear in Michigan continued to push his video camera the bear attack that lasted almost half an hour. The camera and shouts kept the bear a few meters, until his friends came (and she did a great video as well). Running in general does not work, but if they have no choice, remember that the black bear is slower on the downhills.

Use everything you can for a weapon, but be careful with bending over to pick things. Crouching may cause a burden. When two or more backpackers, try a sustained advocacy with stones, sticks and shouting. This may change your mind black bears. Other things that can help include, bear spray, a freon horn and whistles.
