History of the Miniature Dachshund
The story of these miniature Dachshunds mirrors that of their larger relatives, Dachshunds can be back to Germany for many years, to around the 15th Century, athough many believe that ancient Egyptian art shows images of dogs similar to Dachshunds, perhaps their ancestors.
Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers ( "Dachs" means Badger). Badgers were formidable prey and Dachshunds were bred to have courage and bravery bordering on the foolhardy! Their size and shape makes them perfect for hunting both above and below ground.
The breed club was established in 1888 to standardize the breed characteristics and to ensure that these Dogs have the beauty to match their intelligence.
Miniature Dachshunds were used instead of ferrets to drive rabbits from their burrows.
Appearance of the Miniature Dachshund
In appearance, the Miniature Dachshund is really like a Dachshund dwarf version of the standard. They are found in varieties, even coat, long hair, short hair and wire-haired.
With their long, low body Dachshunds are one of the breeds most immediately recognizable. Often called "sausage dogs" by the children, it is easy to see why!
Despite its miniature proportions, Dachshunds are strong and muscular dogs with wide shoulders and hindquarters.
The Dachshund has eyes almond shaped beauties who are set in a perfectly proportioned long face.
Dachshunds come in a variety of colors, beige and black may be the colors most widely perceived even if Many variants exist.
Temperament of the Miniature Dachshund
Dachshunds are loyal and good mood though they may be wary of strangers.
Dachshunds are extremely intelligent, but are not necessarily easy to train as they have a real spirit of their own! Early training and socialization is a real advantage for these dogs, check their hunting instinct is deeply rooted so good these dogs off lead is essential.
Socialized early with children, these dogs are pets good family. Children must learn to manage these dogs with respect, as they sulk if they are treated unfairly. Dachshunds tend to bond particularly strongly with a family member.
Grooming a miniature dachshund
Miniature Dachshunds come in a variety of types of mantle long haired, wire haired and smooth coat. A moderate amount grooming is necessary, especially in the miniature dachshund longhair.
Miniature Dachshund Exercise Requirements
Well that they are small, miniature Dachshunds have been bred as hunting dogs and as such they enjoy their exercise! Miniature Dachshunds require a quantity Moderate exercise, perhaps 20 – 40 minutes per day.
Care must be taken to allow these dogs off lead because of their instinct hunting nature. If they detect an odor, they may well try to go ashore to dig their "prey"!
A well fenced secure garden is a must for miniature dachshunds – they are world-class miners and May as well dig themselves to freedom given the opportunity!
Because of their elongated spine, Miniature Dachshunds should be limited in their access to stairs to prevent damage spine.
Miniature Dachshund Health Problems
The main health problem with miniature dachshunds relates to their elongated spines. Rupture disks are a common problem. Precautions must be taken to prevent these dogs using stairs or jumping on and off furniture, to minimize the risk of damage.
Miniature Dachshunds must not be allowed to gain weight because it imposes constraints extra on their spines. It is essential that their weight is carefully monitored.
Some Dachshunds suffer from skin problems like baldness or absence of pigmentation in the skin.
