elk hunting montana public land

elk hunting montana public land
Where is a good spot to elk hunt on public land in montana.?

A spot where you could just buy your elk ticket over the counter and then would be able to take a bull. Or could sumbody show me site of the public land or sumthing.

Montana uses a weighted draw/permit system for out of state and special hunts. If you are a resident there are OTC tags, none for non-resident. A non-resident also has to file an application early in the year–too late for 2009 now.
Montana does have many areas for elk hunting,so it would depend on where your base of operations would be. I do know that the areas of North West Montana along the Idaho panhandle have good herds still, but there are wolf populations that are creating predation issues south of the Interstate 90 corridor.
The Montana link has a lot in information, but you need to read the regulations for actual permit and non-resident/special hunts. The Link also has a “Hunt Montana” planner section with maps and other info.

Idaho has an OTC system for some areas still, and their website has a hunting guide section also. Same with Montana, special hunts needed to have applications in a while back.
