There's a place in Florida, where the endangered whales each winter give birth to their calves.

Having lived in San Diego, I knew that the observation whales is a good winter hobby, but I did not know until recently that people in this place in Florida to observe the whales, too.

The whales give birth off the coast of Florida to the Georgia border to the south, perhaps in Vero Beach is known as whales. Like their counterparts in the man called "snowbirds," they come from south of their summer home to escape the cold of winter around Massachusetts and Canada's Bay of Fundy. If it is a warm winter in the North, they may not be seen south of St. Augustine.

Why are they called whales? Hunters in centuries past they thought were the "right whale to hunt because this species moves slowly, travel close to shore and float when dead. Nobody hunts more whales. An international agreement adopted in 1935 hunting and right whales have been placed on the endangered species list in 1973.

Why do whales have been hunted in the past? Two reasons: bacon and baleen. The oil produced from fat (fat) was used in lamps and as a lubricant. It has also been used for margarine, lard and shortening. Right whales have no teeth they have baleen, a mustache-like material in the mouth. They trap food behind the baleen when excess water expelled. The baleen, a flexible has been used for the buggy whips, umbrella stays, hoops skirt, strapping for beds, brushes and caning for chairs.

Today, only about 300 northern right whales survive and scientists fear that this number will decrease to 200 in May if things do not change. They speak of the possibility of extinction in a few centuries. And some call the right whale, the great most endangered mammal in the world.

While hunters are no longer a threat to whales, ships. Scientists say usually account for 30-50 percent of deaths of whales. In cooperation with the Navy and many other organizations, they have established a warning system developed when whales are calving in order to prevent as many deaths as possible. Other causes of death include marine debris such as plastics and driftnet fishermen. The Daytona Beach Journal reports that 10-20 percent of whales in Florida come into contact with fishing gear every year.

Starving does not seem to be a problem. Even if they weigh 60-100 tons, they were quickly on their 2800-mile round-trip run from calving northern waters South, go without food for several months. Florida is not the food they eat. In summer, each whale eats as many calories in a day as a being human eats eight months.

When females are calving off the coast of Florida, it's time for "Dad's night out '. Only 30-50 Pregnant whales come to Florida, and scientists have no idea where the males go during the winter. Maybe they do not the idea of swimming 2.800 miles to see their offspring.

A good place to Florida to see the whales is Canaveral National Seashore. You will need binoculars. But be aware that the odds are against seeing. On average, only a dozen between 30-50 whales visiting Florida during the winter are considered by humans. If the weather is good, a day on the beach is a pleasant experience. (Mosquitoes are on holiday at the time.)

If you are looking for a right whale, what you were looking for? The whale probably look as if floating on the surface – Remember that the whale is a mammal fast. It's probably just resting. Look for a triangular tail, fins short and the absence of a fin dorsal. You may see a whale spout water through its blow hole twice – a beak-like shape of V.

If you're lucky, you may be close enough to see a whale that has white spots lice on the head, eyes and around his mouth. They all do. In the world of whales, these are the "fingerprints digital, no two whales have the same patterns of lice (which does not hurt the whale).

Oh, and if you're looking for a whale spout, do not hold your breath. A right whale can hold his breath for 30 minutes.
