The first formed and shaped pieces of metal found during archaeological excavations dating back nearly 5,000 years. The first men lived hunting and eating wildlife. The hunting was done with rocks, wooden clubs, big bones and sharpened wooden stakes. The problem was that rocks, clubs and bones necessary both brute force and close contact with the prey. The strong cold pole throw away, but do not often not be strong enough to pierce the skin of the animal. Agriculture was a concept unknown because the bones and wood sharp break in the ground. All this has changed with the metal discovery and development of the ability to shape it. People who have to heat and shape the metal arrow and spearheads and make metal tools to till the soil were the first engineers of the human race. With the ability to drive so more effective and also to the mainland for food, life becomes easier and smiths were in great demand.
The main focus of the smiths first was to make weapons of death. Weapon for hunting has been an easy step to produce weapons of war – the same arrow and spearheads be used for animals and humans. In peacetime, when the demand for weapons of war abandoned blacksmiths had to find other products from which to earn their livelihood. It is during these periods in the past that the ancient smiths learned the most sophisticated aspects of their trade and began to make everyday items such as vases, urns, goblets and more. Blacksmiths were forced to keep refining their skills to meet customer requirements more demanding. Of course, throughout the ages, blacksmiths continued to produce ever more weapons sophisticated by knives and swords of iron bolts for crossbows for shields and armor, and then barreled and farm equipment from plows for horseshoes.
With the advent of the industrial era, the blacksmith was to be the backbone of progress. He Who created the components and parts that were assembled to the machine that powered the Industrial Revolution. That machines have become more larger and more sophisticated, so did the skills blacksmith in the production of documents necessary for them. Unfortunately, machinery, blacksmith help building would soon replace him. At the end of the 19th century factories could produce the metal work more and more economically than the smith could. Trade has suffered a huge drop and during the Second World War, blacksmiths few left were producing only decorative wrought iron.
However, the metal in the 1960s began to be used increasingly in the architecture and furniture. The Demand for iron artwork also began to grow and the industry has experienced a revival and today, while no longer a mainstay of the industry is a viable and growing business.
Through the ages, tools and equipment used by blacksmiths have undergone tremendous changes. The first blacksmith would not know what to make of a modern forge with its electric furnaces and forges and mechanical presses and hammers. But the basics of the forge did not change – heat metal and shape it. Maybe if the ghost of the past saw this, he must have felt a kinship with this.
