Ohio University – Southern Campus – Equine Studies Program

Ohio University Southern Campus is located in Ironton, Ohio and is a public university four years which offers both associate and bachelor degrees. For those students seeking a degree in equine studies, OU Southern offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree Equine Studies. This program has been developed to provide students with the knowledge and skills that are required to have a long and successful career as a trained professional in the equine industry.

Students who successfully complete the degree will have an appreciation and understanding of the horse through courses in anatomy and physiology, and through its participation in the psychological process of hands on work with horses. Students also know how to care for, feed and maintain a horse to be able to reach their full potential. Besides learning about your own horse, students learn the legal and ethical issues facing the equine industry on a daily. Students will also be introduced into the business side of the horse industry, along with training. Students will also learn good skills communication needed to succeed in today's equine industry.

Equine Studies Program is divided into four distinct parts with the first sector devoted to science and equine health. The courses in this section of the program are the responsibility of a veterinarian with years of experience and include lessons equine nutrition, reproduction, anatomy and physiology, first aid and preventive medicine. The second section of the program is devoted to the commercial part of the equine industry and is designed to promote understanding of the financial and physical aspects of the horse industry. The third part of the program is devoted to riding and training horses. Students will riding lessons in three different locations: the West seat, hunt seat, and seat of the bike. The last part of the curriculum is devoted to field experience and internships. These are essential to give students a realistic view of a career that involves horse.

Graduates of this program will have many options of different races to choose from and students will be able to select different elective courses to improve their knowledge in the field of study they choose to pursue. Graduates will be able to find employment in a number of areas, including:
