I think I was a pretty amazing snowboarder, but I know I'd be lying. I was quite surprised I survived my last vacation without braking my neck, I doubt Whacked my head enough times. Nevertheless, I enjoyed boarding, but most of all what I love the tranquility of the tracks. "Wii Family Ski and Snowboard" captures the spirit of holiday boarding for me.
I confess, much as I loved the first Wii game Family Ski, I did not play as much as I wanted. I found peace in the atmosphere relaxation, and was impressed with the games and use the Wii Balance Board, but the total lack of any sense of accomplishment I disappointed. I win a race and nobody would care. I collect goggles 32 in one, and nobody would give a shit. Fortunately, the latest version has rejuvenated my love for the (now) in series.
The most obvious change in this release is the addition snowboarding. By playing with the Wii Balance Board, the player directs how long the device to the TV. Leaning forwards and backwards simulates the effect to look at the back edge and front of the snowboard, and leads to a turn. In addition, various buttons on the remote and nun-chuck you can to make other moves, such as borders, and cut short. The jump is done by lifting your weight on the side without allowing your feet leave actually the board of directors. Turn both the remote and Nunchuk to 90 degrees on the side, puts you in a retracted position, and increases your speed. I was a little disappointed that it could not be done by moving your weight forward on the plateau. Overall, the controls were good, with or without the use of the Balance Board.
As an alternative to the normal track of game, a new mountain off-piste has been added to the game. Game designers have really experienced what makes some very good natural landscapes. The texture of the snow has also been improved, with work carried out to simulate different consistencies between the powder and pure ice. Visually the snow looks great, but sometimes you feel the effect of these surfaces on the controls, was reduced to allow easier "family" play.
Building character is very good, with players being able to use an existing Mii, or design avatar Family Ski. You can use your new gear unlocked to complete your look, which is very satisfying if you like that sort of thing.
Fortunately, Namco Bandai have brought some sort of an implementation system, offering players access to new ski gear and apparel they complete sections of the game. I was quite pleased when I released a penguin suit to complete certain challenges off-piste. This system could still do with some improvements, as the player has no idea what to do to unblock a specific embodiment, and even when you do a task, you do not know your new items until you quit the game back to the screen core.
Overall I'm happy with them playing, and I suspect that this is playing for a while. I sense a real desire to explore tracks extensively to find some hidden elements, and unlocking content. I'd be happy to see yet another series, I hope which introduces a bit more flexible controls, and better implementation system.
Overall 7 / 10.
