Deer hunting today has become a commercial business, where people are hunting deer for sale.
Some years ago there was a out of state hunters who came to Maine and hunted for a week, but due to inexperience or bad luck, failed to bag a deer. For some reason not to hire a guide. Perhaps the lack of money or desire to hunt on his own was the reason. In any event, the day before he was to leave, he stopped at my place to admire a deer hung yesterday. There was a deer very well, only a small deer.
Still, the deer would look good to a man in his position. This money had been wounded and, although he had been traced to the night, he did not die until sometime during the night. I had tracked the morning and the next moment it seemed, some animal, probably a fox had eaten the fat that surrounds the base of the tail so the tail was missing or separated the body. I noted all the characteristics of the poor animals, including the missing flag. He asked me what had happened to him. I explained that I was a young male, probably never had a tail. I sold the deer and gave in detail the history of hunting. I bet he has been back to Maine for another deer and hope you have learned enough about the animals so you never had to buy another tail deer.
Speaking of days and poaching incidents. Kidnapping of deer is one of the easiest ways bagging one of these animals. There is no sport in it, but poachers used when there is an already established market for deer. Here in the deep woods, is not so easy as in the more open areas by state. I put a lot of thought on this issue since reformed. The Fish and Game Commission and Legislature have squandered much time to try to end this practice through prohibition. Do not know why I never asked a poacher how to prevent abduction and sale of deer. Almost none of them read: "Please have customers willing to so many, there would be no purpose to kill deer for sale."
This would not solve the problem, and I would like to see the day when the guards cracking down on our hunters visit by investigating all deer shot in Maine. This investigation would be impossible, but our guards are willing to try anything once.
I would like in the early days of conservation, lawmakers have given serious thought to control market hunting instead of banning it. I think that an expert in jackets, few could have been approved and permits issued to sell a certain number of deer hunters a success not to bag your game legally. This system could have worked. But as it is, deer hunting, with all its flaws, remains a pretty clean sport. A lot of planning goes into a deer hunt. The control of the game market is very important to prevent illegal whaling. It is important to know the people, not to buy deer meat to the hunter to stop the illegal act.
